This type of credit card offers you a way to earn air miles, much in the same way that a reward credit card allows you to earn points, i.e. by using it to make as many of your purchases as possible in exchange for points. The only way that an airmile credit card makes any sense is if you are the type of person that that pays his/her credit card balance off every month, otherwise the cost of the interest charges would far out way any benefit the airmile credit card user would receive from his/her earned airmiles. There are many different airmile credit card schemes on offer in the UK, some good and some not so good. Be aware of any hidden charges or restrictions on where you can use your airmiles, just how much you have to spend on your airmile credit card before you actually have accrued enough airmiles to fly anywhere at all. Although the actual flight may well be ‘free’, watch out for those additional charges such as surcharges, additional fees and taxes associated with the flight.

To get the most from your airmiles credit card, you must use it (a lot), if you could pay some of your regular bills with it, then you can really start to clock up the airmiles, but a word of caution here, don’t overdo it on the spending front, in an attempt to fly round the world for free.

Check out whether you can increase your airmile total by paying cash for the extra airmiles, the majority of airmile credit card providers allow it but some don’t, best to check it out first before you sign up.

Another offering by some airmile credit cards are discounts at partner stores, so you get a double whammy so to speak.
You need to watch out for the actual amount you would have to spend on the airmile credit card to achieve enough airmiles to be able to claim a ‘free flight’. It may well be that it is not feasible to spend an amount of money on the airmile credit card that makes you eligible for a decent flight.
