BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - EU competition commissioner Neelie Kroes has reminded US credit card group MasterCard Inc that it faces a fine from the EU executive if its fails to comply with a ruling that its multilateral interchange fees (MIFs) are unlawful. Barclays has been slammed for encouraging irresponsible spending by proposing to issue a trial version of a credit card with a limit of £25,000. The European Commission has criticised MasterCard for charging cross-border fees on credit and debit card transactions. It warned that if MasterCard did not remove the fees within 6 months, it will charge fines on a daily basis of up to 3.5% of worldwide turnover.
