The number of new homes built in the US fell to a near-decade low in January, a further sign that the housing slowdown is accelerating, official figures show. The Commerce Department said new home construction dropped 14.3% last month, a figure far greater than forecast. The European Commission has raised its forecast for economic growth in the eurozone this year and cut its prediction for inflation. It raised its prediction for growth in 2007 to 2.4% from 2.1%, although this is still down from 2.7% in 2006. The inflation forecast has been lowered from 2.1% to 1.8%, compared with last year's figure of 2.2%.
