Australia is sending hundreds more troops and 50 police to East Timor to try to contain raging mob violence. A dispute over the sacking of army staff has turned into ethnic violence, with militias, toting guns and machetes, torching houses and vehicles. Film director Michael Winner has said he turned down an OBE in the Queen's 80th birthday honours' list. He told the Sunday Times newspaper, for which he is a columnist: "An OBE is what you get if you clean the toilets well at King's Cross station."
