WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Nevada and South Carolina will likely join Iowa and New Hampshire as kickoff states for the Democratic presidential nominating process in 2008 after a panel voted to recommend the measure to the party's national committee Saturday. The full Democratic National Committee is expected to approve it when it meets next month in Chicago, Illinois. Eye test 'could spot Alzheimer's'

Early dementia could be detected with a simple eye test, similar to those used to test for high blood pressure and diabetes, US scientists believe. The test, developed by a team led by Dr Lee Goldstein, of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, uses a non-invasive laser to study the lens of the eye. Great Britain went 2-1 down in their Davis Cup relegation clash with Israel after an epic five-set doubles defeat. Andy Murray and Jamie Delgado lost 6-3 3-6 7-5 3-6 4-6 to Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich after surrendering a 4-1 lead in the final set. It was the second consecutive rubber in which Murray had gone the distance after beating Ram in Friday's singles. Israel 'seizes' Hezbollah village

Israeli forces say they have seized the Lebanese border village of Maroun al-Ras, an apparent base used by Hezbollah to fire rockets into Israel. Exchanges of fire can be still be heard in the village, said by Hezbollah to be the scene of an "epic battle". Israel has been massing troops along the Lebanese border but says any ground incursion will be limited in scope. Immigration controls attacked

The UK's immigration enforcement measures are "clearly inadequate" and need overhauling to take into account a completely changed landscape, say MPs. A parliamentary report calls for employers of illegal immigrants to be targeted in an effort to build public confidence in the system. Spanish intercept migrant boats

Spain says it has intercepted four boats carrying almost 250 people, thought to be migrants from West Africa trying to reach the Canary Islands. They say two boats arrived at the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera on Saturday while on Friday two vessels reached Gran Canaria. Reports say that some of the migrants were suffering from dehydration and twelve of them were taken to hospital. Thousands of people from Africa try to reach Europe via Spain each year. |
