A jury has been shown CCTV footage of the moment a policewoman was shot dead after responding to an alleged armed robbery in Bradford. Pc Sharon Beshenivsky was killed outside a travel agents in November, Newcastle Crown Court has been told. More than 1,000 violent crimes, including five killings, have been committed by prisoners released early with electronic tags, it has emerged. Home Office figures show tagged offenders have committed one murder and four manslaughters, among other crimes, since the scheme began in 1999. Pamuk wins Nobel Literature prize

Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk has won the 2006 Nobel Prize in literature. The result was announced by the Swedish Academy, confounding pundits who had made Syrian poet Ali Ahmad Said, known as Adonis, favourite. Like the other Nobels, the Literature Prize comes with a cheque for 10m kronor (£740,000). The Academy said: "In the quest for the melancholic soul of his native city, (Pamuk) has discovered new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures."

Downing Street has denied ex-minister David Blunkett's claim that Tony Blair has suffered heart problems since 1988. Mr Blunkett said the PM told him, after treatment for an irregular heartbeat in 2003, that he had suffered with heart problems "on and off" for 15 years. The government has announced a review of its strategy on teaching modern foreign languages in England's schools. There has been widespread concern since language learning was made optional past the age of 14 - triggering a rapid drop in the numbers taking GCSEs. Man jailed over girl's bike death

A convicted drink driver has been jailed for four years after he crashed a quad bike killing a three-year-old girl he had taken for a ride. Steven Connell, 21, from Newhall, Derbyshire, admitted causing Kelcey Kirkham's death by careless driving. Derby Crown Court heard he was one-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit. It was his third drink offence in a year. An inquest into the girl's death has been opened and adjourned.


Bath rape accused 'is paedophile'

A man accused of snatching a six-year-old girl from a bath and raping her is a convicted paedophile, a court has heard. Peter Voisey, of Blyth, Northumberland, denies abduction, rape and sexual assault in Willington Quay, North Tyneside, on 27 December last year. Newcastle Crown Court has heard how the youngster was repeatedly abused in Mr Voisey's car. She was found later, blood-stained and shivering in a freezing back alley.


French in Armenia 'genocide' row

The French parliament has adopted a bill making it a crime to deny that Armenians suffered "genocide" at the hands of the Turks, infuriating Turkey. The bill, which would make genocide denial punishable by a year in jail and a 45,000-euro ($56,400) fine, will now be passed to the Senate and president. Pregnant women 'oily fish alert'

Eating too much oily fish during pregnancy may increase the risk of delivering the baby too early, scientists believe. The researchers told New Scientist magazine the harm is probably caused by high mercury levels in oily fish such as mackerel, salmon and sardines.
