Appeal after man, 76, found dead

Police they are treating the death of a 76-year-old man found at his home near Swansea as "unexplained." Gareth Thomas lived on his own near the village of Waungron, on the outskirts of Pontarddulais. South Wales Police, who have appealed for recent sightings of Mr Thomas, were alerted by neighbours who had not seen him since the Christmas period. Improvements need to be made to some military accommodation following criticism by a senior army officer, the chancellor has acknowledged. Worker dies on North Sea vessel

An accident on board a North Sea support vessel has left one worker dead and another injured. Matthew Grey, 59, from Darlington, was working in the cargo tanks of the Bleo Holm 72 miles north east of Aberdeen when he died on Saturday evening. The pipe fitter's colleague, Norman Jackson, 58, from North Shields, was flown to hospital with an arm injury. The Progressive Unionist Party leader, David Ervine, has been admitted to an east Belfast hospital after falling ill suddenly. Party colleagues said Mr Ervine's family were with him at the Ulster Hospital at Dundonald, but precise details of his condition are not known. Mr Ervine has been an assembly member for East Belfast since 1998. He was one of the key figures who helped in the brokering of the loyalist ceasefire of 1994. |
