LONDON (Reuters) - Underlying British mortgage lending showed its strongest rise in 1-1/2 years in December, in a further sign that the housing market firmed at the end of 2005 after a sharp slowdown for much of the year. The British Bankers' Association said on Friday that underlying mortgage lending rose 5.4 billion pounds in December, above the November rise of 5.2 billion pounds and the strongest increase since June 2004.
